You’re starting to get a little more stressed now you’ve started writing your dissertation. But don’t fret! We’ve compiled a list of tips, tricks and suggestions to help you stay productive and motivated all through the process. Constantly meet with your tutor.
Attend every session you can with your tutor, and ask every question – even the ‘stupid’ ones. You don’t want to spend time writing something without consulting your tutor, to find your tutor wants you to re-write all of it. Believe us, this happens and it can really set you back. So get into the habit early.
Stop trying to tackle it as one big project
We told you in our ‘How to plan your dissertation’ guide that you should try to approach your dissertation as blocks of separate 2,500-word essays. Remember to maintain this approach all the way through the writing of your dissertation as it’s easy to forget and overwhelm yourself! Avoid getting stressed out by referring back to this regularly.
Use a reward system
Make sure to use a reward system to get you through the writing process. Knowing you have to write 1000 words in one day, but knowing you’ve planned to get yourself an indulgent treat at the end of it can be a great motivator. If you don’t trust yourself, you could always ask a friend or
Plan in breaks
If you find yourself easily distracted by moth memes on Facebook, you might find you often get less done than you expect to. Instead, turn off your phone for a period of time and dedicate yourself to your work, until your designated break comes up. We recommend a 15-minute break after every hour, but figure out what works best for you, and stick to it.

The importance of routine
Don’t let the stress of your coursework take over your life – make sure you are continuing to have meals at regular times, sleeping well and taking time to just BREATH. It seems pretty straightforward, but it’s easy to let slip when you’re under a lot of pressure.
Take a break to enjoy life
You’re in your final year of university, take time to enjoy what might be your last time as a student! Taking a break to see your friends, and enjoy some events at the Nottingham Trent SU will not only give you lasting memories but will help give you a fresh perspective when you go back to writing your dissertation the next day.
