How Vlogging can help you build valuable skills

If you have recently read our ‘The benefits of blogging’ post, then you might be interested in other ways that you can be using your social media game to your advantage. Read on to find out how you can make Vlogging work for you.

Developing self Awareness

Creating content on a platform such as Youtube, where you are primarily talking to the camera, can give you the opportunity to explore the way you physically and verbally communicate. For example, you might discover things you do that you didn’t even realise! Maybe you talk too fast, maybe your body is stiff and makes viewing awkward for your audience. Reflecting on this can really help you discover how you can be more effective at communicating, which you can then apply in various professional environments: interviews, meetings and presentations.

Some Serious Confidence building

There’s something about putting yourself in front of a camera and speaking to the world that can make any one of us feel nervous whether that’s down to camera-shyness, or the fear of judgement. Jumping in front of the camera and posting it online is a quick way of getting comfortable with the uncomfortable!

Even if you think you have nothing to share, the moment you begin to get engagement through positive comments and likes is the moment that you realise you do have something valuable to offer. Learning to revel in the confidence boost positive feedback gives you, and learning to accept the negative, can contribute to making you feel like a much more confident person, prepared to take on the world.

Your space for Creative Expression

Your vlogs are an opportunity to express yourself. We feel like this goes without saying, but you can literally create content about anything you might be remotely passionate about; Sports, student life, health and nutrition, beauty, fashion, entertainment and more. Additionally, you also have the option to customise your channel to create your own personal brand.

Looking for an opportunity to Vlog without the commitment? We’re always on the lookout for student and alumni vloggers to create content for our channels! Check out our Blog With Us page for more information or drop us a quick email.

So you want a career in media?

Vlogging can be a major factor in learning the key skills that make up a career in media production, the main two being filming and editing. There are many ways you can do this today, starting at the basic level of filming on your smartphone and downloading an app to edit the pieces. More advanced content creators might want to use a digital camera, configure the best lighting for their video, and edit using Adobe Premiere Pro (or other alternatives).

Even if it’s not media production you want to go into, customising your channel, defining your brand, and tracking analytics to see what’s working well can give you excellent insight into the world of marketing. It’s a great self-development tool and looks great on your CV.

Additionally, you might learn a lot about copyright law and GDPR through experiences along the way, which will prepare you for some of the legal side of a career in media.
